Import problems

File won't import: check the format — Recense supports SPSS .sav and CSV. Other formats (Excel, Stata, R) are not currently supported. Large files may take longer — watch for the import progress indicator. Corrupted .sav files will show a diagnostic error. Try re-exporting from the source application.

CSV looks wrong after import: review the inference screen before accepting. Check delimiter detection, header row count, and column types. If you accepted too quickly, re-import the file and correct the settings.

Data looks wrong

Unexpected values or categories: check the Raw Data view in the Dataset Explorer to see actual values. Verify value labels are correct — edit them in the Variables view if needed. Check whether a filter or weight is active on the table.

Percentages don't sum to 100%: multi-response variables can exceed 100% by design (respondents select multiple options). Check the measure setting — row % and column % have different bases.

AI agent issues

Agent isn't responding: for BYOK, verify your API key is valid and has credit with the provider. For Built-in, check the Account panel for remaining token allowance. For both, ensure a dataset is loaded — the agent needs data context.

Agent gives poor results: add dataset instructions explaining survey context, conventions, and caveats. Clean up variable labels and value labels — the agent reads your metadata. Be specific in prompts: "cross-tabulate Q5 by age group with column percentages" works better than "analyse the data."

MCP connection issues

  • Client can't connect: verify the endpoint URL (https://mcp.recense.ai/mcp), your Bearer API key, and that the Recense browser tab is open and signed in. Verify your plan includes MCP access.
  • Sign-in keeps looping: confirm you're signing in with the same Recense account in both the browser and the MCP client. Try removing and re-adding the MCP server in your client.

Performance

App feels slow: very large datasets (100K+ rows, 500+ variables) may stress browser memory. Close other heavy browser tabs. Avoid opening multiple Recense sessions simultaneously.

App won't load properly: hard-refresh the page (Cmd + Shift + R). Clear the browser cache for recense.ai. Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari all supported).
