Documentation
Everything you need to import survey data, build analysis, set up AI, and manage your account.
Getting Started
Core Workflow
- Import and Review Recense imports SPSS .sav and CSV files directly in your browser. All parsing, encoding detection, and type inference happen on your machine — your data is never uploaded to any server.
- Explore Datasets The Dataset Explorer is where you verify and refine your survey data before analysis. It has three main views: Variables, Question Groups, and Raw Data.
- Tables and Analysis The canvas is the core analysis workspace. Build tables by dragging variables to rows and columns, layer on measures and statistical tests, use expressions for derived dimensions, and add formula cells for bespoke calculations.
- Charts and Sharing Charts in Recense are table-backed — they visualise an existing cross-tabulation rather than reading raw data directly. You can present your canvas in a clean walkthrough mode and publish password-protected snapshots for others to view.
- Text Coding Text coding lets you classify free-text responses into themes, producing a new categorical variable you can tabulate alongside the rest of your dataset. Recense supports AI-assisted theme generation and classification, with full manual override.
AI & MCP
- AI Overview Recense supports three AI paths. All three give you the same capabilities — the difference is where the model runs and how you authenticate.
- Bring Your Own Keys BYOK mode lets you use your own provider API key. Your browser calls the provider directly — keys are stored locally and never pass through Recense servers.
- Hosted Agent Built-in mode routes agent requests through Recense. No API key required — usage is metered against your plan's token allowance.
- MCP Setup MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets external AI assistants control your live Recense session. The assistant can inspect datasets, build tables, and work with the canvas using the same tools as the in-app agent.
- Dataset Instructions Dataset instructions provide the agent with lasting context: what the survey means, how fields should be interpreted, important caveats, and analysis conventions. Instructions are saved with the project.
Reference
- Projects and Saving A Recense project captures everything in your session: dataset, metadata edits, canvas layout, tables, charts, notes, instructions, and agent history. Multiple save options keep your work safe.
- Keyboard Shortcuts Keyboard shortcuts for common actions in the Recense workspace.
- Security and Privacy Recense is local-first by default: import, tabulation, and analysis run in your browser. Cloud projects and cloud datasets are encrypted on your machine before upload, while enterprise hosted compute applies only to datasets your organisation explicitly publishes.
- Team and Billing Recense offers a free trial, Starter, Pro, and Enterprise tiers. This page covers what each includes, how to manage your subscription, and team features.
- Troubleshooting Quick answers to the most common problems. If your issue isn't here, use the in-app Support panel to send a report.
